Africa Health Placements

Africa Health Placements (AHP) offers qualified doctors endorsed global health experiences benefitting the region’s most vulnerable people. We envision a world in which the skills of doctors are available to those who need them most. That’s why we’re on a mission to place and support doctors who want to serve in resource-poor environments while simultaneously growing personally and professionally. We recognise the huge gap between the need for healthcare delivery and the health workers available, and we work to fill that gap.

AHP’s expertise lie in matching doctors with available positions, and in assisting with the complex registration process, so doctors don’t have to. Not only will a doctor learn invaluable clinical skills and exercise their independent decision-making power, but they will also have the opportunity to explore a unique part of the world.

The challenge

Where there are no health workers, there is no healthcare delivery. Every year healthcare delivery advances in leaps and bounds. There is a lot of focus on getting the building blocks of better health systems – such as pharmaceutical distribution and hospital infrastructure – into place around the world. But without people on the ground to deliver care, this counts for very little. In poorer countries a shortage of doctors means crucial skills and knowledge never reach those most in need, with devastating consequences.

The solution

We work to put the right person in the right place. We believe that pragmatic solutions to the global healthcare crisis start with listening. For us, this means listening to the needs of our region’s most vulnerable people as well as to the needs of the doctors who want to serve them. Since 2005, AHP has built up a broad and detailed knowledge base, giving us a good picture of where the problems are and what the most practical ways are to solve them.

AHP has the bureaucratic know-how to get a doctor registered as quickly and efficiently as possible. We also have the local understanding and strategic relationships to place doctors in the facilities where they can gain and give the most – matching doctors’ skills and interests to local needs.

Our minimum one-year placements give doctors enough time to understand the needs of their setting, and to deliver on them.

Caring for the doctors

We also believe in strengthening the fabric of care. Experience has taught us that doctors who themselves feel cared for in turn offer the best clinical care. That’s why AHP works to ensure that our doctors feel connected and supported in their new environments, professionally and personally.

Our mission

AHP is on a mission. Since 2005 we have placed over 4,100 doctors, reaching more than 34-million patients in rural South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi, Kenya and Tanzania. The impact of just one doctor can be immense: in a paediatric department of a rural KwaZulu-Natal hospital, one additional doctor improved the mortality rate by 70%. Four extra doctors at a rural Eastern Cape hospital cut the maternal death rate from five to zero.

Numbers like these are just the start. But what they represent are real people, doctors and patients, whose lives are changed forever. AHP’s mission is under way, but the story of our success will be a collaborative one. And that story is still being written.
